Canada’s ruling party will consider a proposal to decriminalize all illicit drugs at its upcoming national convention, and while Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hasn’t endorsed legalizing any drugs other than marijuana, the idea has significant support among other party leaders.
The plan is designed to help address the opioid crisis by treating it as a health problem instead of as a law enforcement matter.
Decriminalization of opioids and other drugs has previously been supported by the country’s third largest political party and by the city of Vancouver. As for marijuana, the country plans to legalize it for recreational purposes later this year.
