Va. offers free Uber rides to addiction treatment

A pilot program in Virginia is offering free Uber rides to and from outpatient addiction centers and pharmacies, eliminating a barrier to treatment for poorer people in a rural area without mass-transit options.

Participants can simply call the local Goodwill office to arrange a ride; they do not need to own a smartphone.

A similar program at a medical center in Cleveland has had dramatic success, reducing the dropout rate to zero. Previously, the dropout rate was 24 percent for outpatient sessions and 38 percent for individual therapy sessions.
