N.Y. says even uncertified hospitals should provide detox

New York State has begun allowing hospitals that aren’t certified to provide detox services to provide them anyway, saying it’s better to treat addicts immediately rather than force them to wait for space in a more highly qualified facility.

The state Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services, which certifies hospitals for detox and rehab, issued a letter saying it would allow uncertified hospitals to get waivers to provide detox services. The letter said requiring addicts to wait for beds to become available to other facilities was resulting in potentially fatal missed opportunities for treatment.
