HHS Secretary: Addiction is not a moral failing

Addiction “is not a moral issue," according to Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar, who says drug dependence should not be stigmatized and should be treated as a medical condition, not a personal weakness or moral fault.

People with an opioid problem "are not individuals who are seeking out to be drug addicts or are seeking out a high. They are individuals who are getting trapped in a cycle of addiction," he added.

Azar is a former president of the U.S. division of drug maker Eli Lilly and Company.
