San Francisco plans to open two safe injection sites by July, 2018, becoming the first city in the country to do so.
Similar sites have been opened in Canada, Australia, and several European countries.
The goal is not to encourage illegal drug use, but to provide greater safety for people who would use drugs anyway, and reduce the scourge of used needles that present a significant public health problem. In one recent month, the city collected more than 13,000 used syringes on its streets.
A recent poll showed that about two-thirds of city residents favor the idea of safe injection sites.
