Vancouver to experiment with opioid vending machines

Vancouver is about to experiment with vending machines that will distribute pure, measured doses of opioids to addicts in an effort to prevent overdoses from street drugs.

The machines will dispense measured doses at timed intervals to registered users who will be identified through biometric tests.

The experiment is being funded by a $1.4 million grant from Health Canada, with the idea that it can be scaled up and used elsewhere if it’s successful.

Overdoses killed 1,422 people in British Columbia in 2017, up 43 percent over the previous year.
