A shocking 38% of Americans were prescribed opioids in 2015, according to the federally funded National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
That works out to almost 92 million people.
The survey found that 11.5 million people, or nearly 5% of the population, obtained prescription opioids by illicit means. And some 1.9 million people reported a full-fledged addiction.
Opioids are being prescribed at four times the rate they were 15 years ago, according to Dr. Wilson Compton, deputy director of the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse.
